Covid-19 Situation Report

IN FOCUS: COVID-19:

Protecting our healthcare workers

The risk of a surge in COVID-19 still remains, as countries across the world continue to experience surge in cases. Despite the decline in the number of new confirmed cases in Nigeria, NCDC continues to work with other institutions and partners to ensure continuity of the national public health response. This includes the training of health workers on infection prevention control.

The SARS-CoV-2 virus is primarily spread through contact with the respiratory droplets of an infected person. Healthcare workers who regularly come in contact with suspected and confirmed cases of COVID-19, are at an increased risk of exposure to COVID-19. Limiting transmission among health workers through infection prevention and control (IPC) is critical to protecting the entire population.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, NCDC has been training health workers, providing resources and supplies for IPC across health facilities. This is focused on five key IPC strategies to limit transmission in health care facilities:

  1. Early recognition and source control using the Screen, Isolate and Notify (SI-N) approach based on the case definition for COVID-19. This starts from the triage station
at points of entry where questions are asked, and a temperature reading is taken.
